Kendrick Lamar is continuing to win awards for his Super Bowl LIX performance in February 2025. On Sunday, September 7, at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the Compton rapper received an Emmy for Outstanding Music Direction for their performance, which notably included a performance of “Not Like Us”.

The timing of Lamar’s Super Bowl show, announced in September 2024, could not have been more perfectly timed. About two months before, in November 2024, the “Money Trees” maker released his sixth solo album, GNX, to widespread critical acclaim. Despite the new music, fans were still undecided about whether he would perform his well-known song ‘Not Like Us’, which contains a diss against Drake, on a national television broadcast.

In January 2025, Drake filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group, alleging that his own record label had defamed him by promoting K Dot’s song, which refers to him as a “certified pedophile.” The situation only intensified the excitement for the halftime show to a fever pitch.

Lamar delivered on Super Bowl Sunday. He played a selection of songs from his repertoire, including “All the Stars” and “tv off,” and was joined by special guests Samuel L. Jackson, SZA, DJ Mustard, and Serena Williams, and unapologetically performed “Not Like Us” even though he was facing a pending lawsuit. The concert garnered widespread critical approval and remained a popular topic on social media for several days.

The “squabble up” rapper received seven Emmy nominations for the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, which starred Kendrick Lamar. Lamar’s second Emmy was marked by the Creative Emmy for Outstanding Music Direction, which was picked up by co-music director Tony Russell. He won his first award in 2022 for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) after appearing as a special guest in the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show alongside Dr. Dre.

The Compton native’s trophy shelf is becoming increasingly crowded. He currently holds 22 Grammy Awards, encompassing the five he received at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards roughly a week prior to his Super Bowl performance.
