Jaywon Advises Young Artists: Streaming Numbers And Income Do Not Define Greatness

Nigerian singer Jaywon has addressed younger artists who link high streaming numbers, financial success, and extensive publicity with being superior musicians.

He expressed his views in an Instagram post during the ongoing online debate between Wizkid and Seun Kuti. This situation has reignited discussions about legacy, respect, and long-term influence in the music industry.

Jaywon pointed out that many emerging artists are mistakenly interpreting music as solely about charts and digital metrics, neglecting the deeper significance of artistry.

“The problem with a lot of you youngins and small minds is thinking music is only about numbers,” he remarked. “You believe that because you’ve got streams, recognition, a strong PR machine and money to throw around, that automatically makes you the best artist in the world.”

He emphasized that true excellence in music encompasses more than just streaming figures and visibility, highlighting that real artistry is characterized by influence, substance, and endurance.

“Music isn’t about numbers. It’s about impact, changing minds and touching souls,”

he stated.

Jaywon also referenced global and Nigerian icons such as Bob Marley and Fela Anikulapo Kuti, noting that their lasting relevance stems from the powerful messages and cultural significance in their music.

“That’s why legends like Bob Marley and Fela still matter,” he said. “Their music is forever.”

His remarks have led to discussions online, with many fans acknowledging that while numbers are important in the current industry, legacy is ultimately based on impact rather than algorithms.
