How Mustard Lost 120 Pounds And Improved His Health Through Music, Mindset, And Movement

Mustard (formerly known as DJ Mustard) has experienced significant weight loss, reducing his physical frame while his name continues to be recognized globally. The producer of Kendrick Lamar’s notable track “Not Like Us” recently shared details about losing 120 pounds and improving his health.

In an interview with Men’s Health for its Winter 2026 issue, published on January 6, Mustard expressed feeling self-conscious during Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 Super Bowl halftime performance. At that time, he weighed 220 pounds, which was lower than his peak weight of 340 pounds, yet he remained concerned about his appearance.

He attributed his weight gain to poor eating habits and consumption of lean (a combination of prescription cough syrup and soda) that contributed to his heaviest weight around 2018. The passing of his friend, rapper Fredo Santana, in 2019—due to complications from heavy drug use—motivated Mustard to change his lifestyle.

For Mustard, weight loss became a crucial matter for his health, as his doctor provided guidance on where to start. He mentioned, “I’ve been trying to lose weight for my whole adult life,” noting that he had engaged multiple trainers and tried various diets. His doctor frequently pointed out issues such as a fatty liver and high blood pressure, with the simple solution being weight loss. Frustrated by this advice, he decided to take action.

The Los Angeles native began incorporating walking and running into his routine, as well as improving his diet, inspired by a health-conscious colleague. By 2021, he had reached a weight of 215 pounds.

Currently, at 35 years old, Mustard stabilizes around 225 pounds, maintaining this weight through a newfound interest in tennis, which developed while collaborating with singer Ella Mai. He stated, “I’m just an extremist,” emphasizing his commitment to excelling in activities he enjoys.

Mustard also mentioned that, in addition to working on his own music, he continues to provide Kendrick Lamar with beats.
