Nigerian rapper Erigga has expressed his views on what he thinks is a significant factor contributing to the decline of genuine love in contemporary relationships, the impact of internet scammers, commonly referred to as Yahoo boys.

During an interview on Yanga FM Lagos, the Warri-born rapper stated that the extravagant spending habits of these scammers have established unattainable standards for relationships, making romance feel more transactional than emotional.

“Yahoo boys have killed romance,” Erigga said frankly. How long has it been since you’ve seen a couple walking hand in hand down the street. It has been a lengthy period. We’re cultivating a generation of men who judge their self-worth solely by their material possessions.

He reminisced about a bygone era when dating was within reach and driven by sincere attachment. He recalled a period when a casual outing with a meat pie and a bottle of Fanta could bring happiness to a relationship. At that time, women appreciated the small things. Currently, the primary focus is on monetary gain, with men contributing to this issue by overexerting themselves in an attempt to impress.

Erigga stressed that love and relationships should not be founded solely on wealth, but rather on emotional connection and mutual values. He encouraged men to form relationships based on understanding, humour, and communication, while also advising women to place a higher value on sincerity than on material presents.

“Love cannot be measured by wealth alone,” he concluded. Effective emotional intelligence and authentic communication are the keys to maintaining genuine connections between people.
