Afrobeats artist Davido has shared the names of the musicians who motivated him to follow a career in music, highlighting prominent figures in Hip Hop and R&B as his initial influences.

In a discussion at the Grammy Museum, Davido stated that his childhood was filled with American urban music. He mentioned how he was captivated by the energy of 50 Cent, the melodies of Nelly, the charm of Ludacris, and the smooth singing of Usher. Notably, Usher’s 8701 album made a significant impact on him.

Davido noted that these artists collectively fueled his enthusiasm for music. He remarked that his path was shaped not by one particular album or event, but by a mix of artistic influences that guided him toward the music industry. “I have a couple of inspirations,” he said, acknowledging how various performers influenced his decision to dedicate his life to music.

Looking back at his own work, Davido identified his 2014 hit Aye as the track he aspires to use to inspire others, similar to how his idols inspired him. He described the song as a strong representation of African culture, commending its rich instrumentation and lasting appeal. Even after nearly ten years, he noted that Aye continues to garner one of the most enthusiastic reactions at his performances.

After its release, the Aye music video rapidly gained popularity on YouTube, becoming the most-viewed Nigerian video in the first quarter of 2014, thereby establishing itself as one of his most significant records.
