D Smoke & Lucky Daye – Frequency

D Smoke Lucky Daye Frequency

Regardless of how many times his story is discussed, D Smoke’s connection to music will always be inspirational. He started as both a music and Spanish teacher at Inglewood High School. A native of Los Angeles worked there for several years while building a professional career.

The rapper and songwriter would eventually put out his inaugural body of work in ’06, and in 2007, he received an ASCAP award alongside his older brother, who is known as SiR. It was in 2019 that things started to come together for D Smoke. He took the top prize on the first season of Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow, claiming $250,000.

His success allowed him to release his 2020 project Black Habits, which went on to be nominated for Best Rap Album and earned him a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist.

He has been active in the singles and features market since 2021, but has not released an album since then. Since May, he has released three tracks, each with similar color schemes in their cover art. It may be insignificant, but occasionally that development hints at a new album on the horizon.

So far, there’s been no announcement, but we remain hopeful that D Smoke is following the path we’ve anticipated. His most recent release, “Frequency” with Lucky Daye, showcases the same burnt orange colour scheme as “Na Na Na” and “No Passes”.

The song’s “frequency” is quite captivating, boasting stunning guitar and string arrangements, punctuated by jazzy horn sections around the halfway mark. The stripped-back instrumental offers plenty of space for Smoke’s lyricism and Daye’s warm vocals to take center stage. Take a look at this below.
