Coco Jones Shares That Her Fiancé, Donovan Mitchell, Reached Out To Her Through Direct Messages Prior To Their In-Person Meeting

Donovan Mitchell reached out to Coco Jones through direct message before they met in person, but she is pleased that she did not see it. During a conversation with Tiffany Hunt from Complex on December 16, the “ICU” singer discussed the NBA star’s message and expressed her belief that it “wouldn’t have worked anyway.”

“He had known of me for years prior to our meeting because ‘Bel-Air’ had collaborated with his shoe line, so he had seen the show before its release and was curious, asking, ‘Who that?’ He mentioned that he contacted me on Instagram, but I didn’t see it,” Jones explained. When asked about the message, she noted that Mitchell had sent “something with a red heart.”

“I thought, ‘Oh, good, that wouldn’t have worked anyway. I don’t want any heart, I don’t know you,’” Jones added. “That’s how you know it’s above us. It’s God. We’re meant to be.” The couple began dating in 2023 and announced their engagement in July.

Later in the interview, Jones discussed a song on her debut album, Why Not More?, that was inspired by or reminded her of Mitchell, revealing a lesser-known fact about his involvement in the album. “I think the song ‘You,’ for sure,” she said.

The “Double Back” artist then shared that Mitchell is the voice featured in the intro of “Thang 4 U.” She mentioned, “He’s the voice on there, talking. I don’t know if people can notice that, but I feel like Why Not More? is kind of the Coco leading up to being in love … My next project will be just me in love.”

Jones’ Why Not More? — which ranked at No. 4 on Rap-Up’s Best R&B Albums Of 2025 list — is nominated for Best R&B Album at the 2026 Grammy Awards. It is competing against Teyana Taylor’s Escape Room and Leon Thomas’ MUTT, among other albums. The winner will be announced on February 1, 2026.

A week later, she will join Charlie Puth and Brandi Carlile to provide pregame entertainment for Super Bowl LX, where Jones will perform the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
