Chike Discusses His Experience Of Leaving The Church

Nigerian singer Chike has discussed his personal experiences that influenced his relationship with faith and his decision to stop attending church, while also gaining attention for a kind act towards a loyal fan.

In a recent interview, Chike shared an uncomfortable incident from his past that led him to distance himself from church activities. He mentioned attending a church service where the praise-and-worship leader was someone he had previously been involved with. This unexpected meeting created a sense of discomfort that hindered his focus.

“The lady leading praise and worship… we had history,” he remarked. “I was having flashbacks. She was praying, and I was just wondering what was happening.” The discomfort prompted him to cease attending after just one week.

Despite this, he emphasized that his choice was not about losing his belief in God. He reflected on earlier times in his career when he relied significantly on prayer, particularly during a challenging phase while living in Primewater Gardens with his girlfriend at the time. “I just said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me,” he recalled.

Chike also recounted a bewildering experience shortly after the release of his debut album, where he unintentionally consumed a potent edible. “Three, four days into the album release, I didn’t even know where I was,” he noted.

While he continues to believe in God, Chike expressed that the church structure does not resonate with his lifestyle. He emphasized that what is truly important, in personal, public, or leadership contexts, is treating others well. “You just need to do right by people,” he stated, mentioning that he does not feel compelled to adhere to a rigid definition of Christian living.

In a related event, the singer recently drew the attention of fans online by rewarding a female listener who demonstrated remarkable loyalty to his music. After Spotify’s annual Wrapped report was released, a fan named Ope revealed that Chike was her top artist of the year, having listened for an impressive total of 36,341 minutes, placing her among his top 1% of listeners.

She shared a screenshot and humorously noted that the singer had overlooked her dedication. Chike later responded to her tweet in a friendly manner, asking for her bank details: “Good morning! Your bank, please!”

While he did not reveal the amount he sent, the gesture generated excitement among fans, many of whom quickly shared their own Spotify statistics in hopes of receiving similar recognition.
