Cardi B is always straightforward, and her eagerly awaited second album, AM I THE DRAMA? , shows that again. The rapper from the Bronx used one song called “Pretty & Petty” to directly respond to her ongoing dispute with another artist, BIA, a situation that has been in the spotlight for more than a year. In a recent talk on “The Breakfast Club,” Cardi shared why she decided to bring this up in her new music.

“Sometimes another girl will come out and talk trash about me while everyone cheers her on. If I respond, people think I’m just jealous,” she told the show’s hosts, Charlamagne Tha God and Loren LoRosa. But she couldn’t let it go when BIA supposedly talked about her kids. “When my children grow up and see that, they’ll ask me, ‘What did you say, what did you do? ’ I can’t tell my kids I just ignored it,” Cardi insisted. “You see how I handled it? ”

The song itself was very clear about her feelings. Over strong beats from DJ SwanQo and Sean Island, Cardi fired off a bunch of clever digs, poking fun at BIA’s achievements and pointing out what she thinks are personal insults. “Name five songs from BIA, you have a gun to your head, bam, I’m dead,” she rapped before adding, “Does she even have a BET Award? ”

Cardi also talked about the tension behind the scenes that led to her decision. She said BIA spread false rumors about her loyalty while she was married to Offset. “You were really trying to mess up my family,” she mentioned, explaining that she needed to find out who was spreading those lies. “I know for sure it was her,” Cardi said, referring to lines in BIA’s diss track “SUE MEEE? ” that hinted at cheating.

In the end, “Pretty & Petty” became Cardi’s opportunity to tell her side of the story on her own terms. “I told you, girl, I would respond when I was ready,” she rapped at the end of the song. When she talked to “The Breakfast Club,” she wrapped it up by saying, “You thought it was funny to mention my kid’s name. I’m coming for you, and I did it in the right way.”
