Burna Boy, an Afrobeats sensation, recently made an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, during which he discussed the progression of Afrobeats and its profound ties to African culture.

The artist who won a Grammy Award described the genre’s global success as a “return to the source,” tracing its rhythm and influence back to the continent where it originated.

On The Jennifer Hudson Show, Burna Boy discussed how Afrobeats’ global increase is a component of a natural cultural progression. He claimed that in his opinion, everything in life follows a cyclical pattern. Africa is where every journey ultimately begins, and Africa is the origin of all music.

The singer then went on to describe Afrobeats as a reflection of that journey, music that has traversed the world and returned home. “Right now, Afrobeats is essentially a revival of its original roots.”

Hudson inquired with Burna Boy about a longstanding rumour that his family has a historical connection to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. The singer confirmed that his grandfather, veteran broadcaster Benson Idonije, was indeed Fela Kuti’s first manager. “He proudly acknowledged the family legacy that continues to influence his musical journey, noting that his grandfather was Fela’s very first manager.”

Burna Boy jokingly mentioned that he would have liked to have his grandfather on the show, but pointed out that the 88-year-old music icon doesn’t travel frequently anymore. It would have been better to bring him, but he’s reached an age where it’s no longer suitable. The man made a joke that he doesn’t enjoy flying.

The conversation highlighted Burna Boy’s strong personal ties to the origins of Afrobeats, a genre that has overcome geographical boundaries while remaining deeply rooted in African culture. His comments not only expressed his pride in his roots but also underscored the genre’s lasting connection to the trailblazers who initially established it.
