Nigerian Afrobeat star, Ayra Starr, has issued an apology in response to criticisms following a viral video where she casually shook hands with veteran juju singer, King Sunny Ade, at a recent event.

The self acclaimed Sabi Girl faced backlash on social media for perceived disrespect, with many labeling her as an uncultured Nigerian lady.

Ayra Starr addressed the situation, expressing regret for any offense caused and clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident. In a post on the social media (X) today, Saturday, January 27, 2024, the Mavin Records signee explained that due to the lights and nerves at the event, she initially did not recognize King Sunny Ade. However, upon realizing her mistake, she returned to greet everyone properly.

The Grammy nominee emphasized that she has never been disrespectful and apologized to the legend, referring to King Sunny Ade as “uncle.” She also acknowledged her Yoruba heritage and clarified that the video started after she had already greeted Burna Boy’s mom.

In her post, she wrote, “I’m so sorry , I had just walked in and all the lights and nerves didn’t let me see but i came back around to greet everyone properly, I have never been that girl to be disrespectful, I’m a proper Yoruba girlllll and the video didn’t start until after I’d greeted burna’s mom ! I’m very sorry to the legend, uncle and King Sunny Ade,”

Ayra Starr’s apology aims to clear the air and convey her respect for the veteran artist, emphasizing her commitment to cultural etiquette.
