Pop star Adekunle Gold shared that his popular song Coco Money took a long time to be released, needing over a year to be approved before it could come out officially.

He talked about this in a recent interview, highlighting the tough challenges that often get ignored in music-making.

In a video from the interview, Adekunle Gold, wearing a brown crocodile-patterned jacket and sitting by an Apple Music microphone, said clearly, “It took more than a year to get Coco Money cleared. ” This shows the lengthy journey artists go through when dealing with pre-existing songs.

Coco Money was released on July 18, 2025, and it features elements from Rihanna’s hit song Bitch Better Have My Money from 2015. Unlike sampling, where parts of the original song are used directly, interpolation means artists have to recreate the melody or words while still getting permission from the original songwriters and publishers. For a well-known song like Rihanna’s, this required Adekunle Gold and his team to get agreements from many rights holders, which can be both expensive and take a lot of time.

This insight helps explain why many artists prefer to create their own songs. Getting the rights often involves slow talks about payments, royalties, and how the song can be used. In Adekunle Gold’s situation, this pushed back the release of a song that was otherwise ready for fans.

Even with the delay, it turned out to be a good choice. Coco Money is now praised for mixing modern Afropop with traditional Yoruba street sounds, called Elegbe, making it one of the best tracks from his latest album. Adekunle Gold’s determination not only created a successful song but also demonstrated his dedication to being creative, even if the business side makes things harder.
