Portable Discusses The Challenging Experiences He Has Faced

Nigerian singer Portable has openly discussed a significant and painful moment from his childhood, sharing that the death of his mother when he was 13 years old compelled him to become self-sufficient and changed the course of his life.

During his appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast, he reflected on growing up without the care of his mother and the difficulties that ensued.

Portable noted that while he had relatives and others around him after her death, none could provide the love, guidance, and support that his mother offered.

“I lost my mother when I was 13. There were people around me, but they could not take care of me the way my mother would have,”

he explained.

He mentioned that his mother had always ensured he had food and pocket money, but things shifted dramatically after her passing. Confronted with the necessity to survive independently, he began engaging in petty trading for his livelihood.

“My mother used to give me food and pocket money. After she died, I began selling pure water to take care of myself,”

he said.

Reflecting on those early challenges, Portable acknowledged that they laid the groundwork for his resilience. He feels that the lessons learned while navigating life on the streets instilled in him the values of hard work, survival, and determination that formal education could not provide.

Currently, he attributes those experiences to shaping his perspective on life and the relentless ambition that has contributed to his success in Nigeria’s music industry.
