Portable Explains His Decision To Leave School

Nigerian singer Portable has discussed his educational experiences, stating that financial difficulties caused him to pause his studies but expressing a desire to return to school to obtain his qualification.

In an interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, Portable reflected on his early challenges, sharing that he sold sachet water to support his education due to a lack of financial backing.

He revealed that he was studying business administration at Kwara State Polytechnic when his academics were interrupted. Despite exiting the educational system, he emphasized that finishing his education remains an important goal for him.

Portable also mentioned that he was often referred to as “olodo” in his family, a term commonly used to refer to someone perceived as academically weak or uneducated, even though his father ensured that his siblings received formal education.

He indicated that his circumstances have changed, as he now bears the responsibility of financially supporting both his siblings and his father despite not having completed his studies.

He stated:

“I no finish school, the time wey I dey go school, I sell pure water, I no see anybody to sponsor me. I will still finish school, I be student of Kwara Poly where I studied business administration. My papa send my brothers and sisters go school, na me be Olodo but now, na me dey feed all of them. Government no give any of them job. Me wey be the Olodo come dey feed and support my papa. It’s not must that before you finish school before you get it in life. You fit go outside and get it then come back and finish school…”

Portable concluded by stating that while education is important, success does not rely on a single approach. He believes some individuals achieve financial success before later returning to complete their education, a path he hopes to follow.
