YCee Discusses The Insights Of His Royalty Experience With His Music Catalogue

YCee has revealed that he has never received a royalty cheque despite achieving over 100 million streams in his music career. He made this disclosure during a recent appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, discussing his experiences with his former record label, Tinny Entertainment.

YCee stated that the terms of his recording agreement and the label’s stance on recouping its investment resulted in him not earning from his streaming success. He mentioned that his contract included a 70/30 revenue split; however, the label claimed it had not yet recouped its investment in his career, which hindered any royalty payments.

He explained, “The mega hits and 100 million streams that I have had, I didn’t get any money off them. I was signed to Tinny Entertainment. I had a recording contract and it was a 70/30 split. It was a situation where I wasn’t being remitted off the earnings because at the time, my previous employer felt he hadn’t recouped what he invested.”

YCee also contrasted his public image with his financial situation at that time. Although his songs were popular, he received endorsement opportunities and traveled internationally, he noted that the income from his music did not reflect the success perceived by fans.

“At that time, the songs were going crazy, endorsements, and I was traveling the world, and it was looking good from the outside looking in, but it wasn’t making sense to me in other areas. So I didn’t make any money off my streams,”

he added, explaining the issues with his previous label.

His comments have sparked renewed discussions about record deals, royalty structures, and recoupment clauses in the music industry, with many artists emphasizing the importance of understanding contract terms before partnering with a label.
