YCee Addresses 2020 Mental Health Diagnosis

YCee has discussed a challenging period in his life, sharing that a mental health diagnosis in 2020 led him to temporarily step away from music to focus on recovery.

In an appearance on the Afropolitan podcast, the artist reflected on the personal struggle he faced during the COVID-19 lockdown, noting that the diagnosis had a significant impact on both his professional and personal life.

He revealed that he spent several months in London, where he was frequently hospitalized for treatment. However, due to his visa restrictions, he had to return to Nigeria to continue his medical care and therapy.

YCee described this time as one of the most difficult experiences he has encountered, explaining that his recovery journey was complex, involving ongoing treatment, medication, and professional support that lasted several years.

He stated,

“In 2020, I got diagnosed with a mental health condition during the lockdown. I was in London for six months and was in-and-out of the hospital for about three months. I had to return to Nigeria to continue treatment because of the type of Visa I was on. Coming back to Lagos and getting into the system of mental health in Nigeria was a very long six years. I was on medication and had to be hospitalized several times while still dealing with therapies. It was up and down. Sometimes it looked good, and sometimes it just gets really dark.”

Despite the difficulties, YCee offered a positive update, indicating that he is now in a much more stable place after receiving the necessary treatment and support.

His open discussion highlights the importance of seeking professional help and ongoing care, while also providing fans with a better understanding of the reasons for his temporary absence from the music scene.
