YG Says Kendrick Told Him Never Drop Albums Just to Exit A Deal

YG is preparing to release his new album, The Gentlemen’s Club, marking his first project in six years. When asked about the extended gap between albums, the Compton artist mentioned that he is following the advice Kendrick Lamar gave him regarding the importance of not rushing album releases just to fulfill a contractual obligation.

In a video conversation with DJ Hed, which was released on YouTube on June 4, YG shared that he played Kendrick his new album and reflected on a past period when he was releasing projects solely to exit his Def Jam deal. Kendrick cautioned him against hurrying through albums, suggesting that he should put forth his best effort with each release.

“I was talking to Dot, I’m playing him the album and explaining what I was doing, like putting out albums just to get out the deal because my deal was complicated,” he said. “He (Kendrick) was like, ‘Bro, you ain’t never supposed to do that. You gotta give it your all every time.'”

YG described The Gentlemen’s Club as a concept album featuring genuine stories and viewpoints. The leader of 4Hunnid aims to achieve respect and critical recognition with this project.

YG’s seventh album, The Gentlemen’s Club, is set to be available on all digital streaming platforms on June 19.
