Wizkid’s Collaboration With Drake Paved The Way For Afrobeats Artists, According To Nasty C

South African rapper Nasty C has acknowledged Nigerian artist Wizkid, recognizing him as a significant contributor to the rise of African music in the global mainstream.

In a recent podcast interview, Nasty C reflected on the transformation of Afrobeats from a regional sound to an international commercial force, citing Wizkid’s 2016 collaboration with Canadian rapper Drake as a pivotal moment.

He stated that the hit song “One Dance” played a crucial role in altering the international perception of African music and facilitated opportunities for a new generation of artists aiming for global recognition.

Nasty C noted that following the success of the track, African music experienced a substantial increase in visibility and financial viability, making the genre appealing beyond its initial audience.

“The collaboration between Wizkid and Drake on ‘One Dance’ opened the door for African artists. After this collaboration, African music saw a significant increase. In several of my interviews in Nigeria and Ghana, the hosts informed me that some rappers were even transitioning to Afrobeats due to its newfound profitability following Wizkid’s partnership with Drake,”

he mentioned.

He further emphasized that the effects of that period continue to influence the current prevalence of Afrobeats, as more African musicians successfully enter global charts, festivals, and award shows.

Over the years, “One Dance” has been frequently cited as a landmark record that connected Afrobeats with mainstream pop culture, contributing to the genre’s ongoing global expansion.
