Nigerian artist Tiwa Savage has launched the Tiwa Savage Music Foundation, an initiative aimed at developing the next generation of African music professionals. The foundation focuses not only on singers but also on a wide range of industry roles, including producers, songwriters, sound engineers, executives, and other creative talents who play crucial behind-the-scenes roles.

The foundation’s objective is to address the lack of access to quality music education and professional training in various regions of Africa. During the launch, Savage discussed the significant global influence of Afrobeats and emphasized the need for a robust support system within the industry.

Savage stated, “Afrobeats has captured the world’s attention, but an industry cannot stand on artists alone. Behind every global sound is an ecosystem of producers, engineers, entertainment lawyers, publishers, innovators, and composers. If we do not intentionally develop them, we weaken the very house we are trying to grow.”

Reflecting on her own experiences, Savage noted how her scholarship to Berklee College of Music at age 24 transformed her perspective. She highlighted that this opportunity broadened her understanding of global systems and the importance of knowledge in fostering creativity.

She also addressed the rapid advancements in technology, including artificial intelligence, and the necessity for African creatives to be prepared for future developments. “The question is whether we will be educated leaders in this space, or observers left behind,” she remarked.

The foundation’s inaugural program is a partnership with Berklee, offering a four-day intensive training in Nigeria called Berklee in Nigeria: Tiwa Savage Intensive Music Program. Scheduled for April 23–26, 2026, the program aims to train 100 selected participants in live performance, songwriting, music production, and music business.

The program will take place daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., concluding with a live showcase of participants’ original work, a closing ceremony, and scholarship presentations. Participants will also receive advice on further educational opportunities through Berklee’s on-campus and online offerings.

Berklee President Jim Lucchese mentioned that this is the school’s first “Berklee on the Road” program in Nigeria. He described the initiative as a means to increase global access to Berklee’s curriculum through collaboration with accomplished alumni like Savage.

Berklee’s assistant vice president for global programs and partnerships, Jason Camelio, emphasized the significance of collaborating with local artists to enhance educational experiences. He stated, “There is no better way to connect with the music community in Nigeria than with Tiwa Savage.”

Applications for emerging musicians, producers, and songwriters across Africa will be accepted until March 20, 2026. While tuition costs are fully covered for selected participants, they will be responsible for their travel and accommodation in Lagos.

In addition to this program, the foundation aims to raise awareness about music-related career opportunities and provide young African creatives with the necessary training and professional development to establish sustainable careers. For Tiwa Savage, this endeavor represents more than just a program; it is about building a strong foundation for the industry.
