Nigerian Afrobeats artist Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, has discussed the challenges he encountered at the beginning of his career, notably facing rejection for choosing to sing in Yoruba.

In a recent interview with Famous TV, the “Sungba” hitmaker shared his experiences during a time when opportunities were limited.

Asake mentioned that many show promoters rejected his performances, citing concerns that his Yoruba-influenced style would not resonate broadly. Despite the pressure to change his approach, he remained confident in his decision.

“At some point, a lot of people said no to me. They didn’t allow me to perform at shows because I spoke Yoruba. But I am grateful I didn’t stop, and I continued to believe in myself,” he stated.

Instead of compromising his sound or neglecting his roots, Asake embraced what made him distinctive. Today, that cultural authenticity has become a key aspect of his success, allowing him to establish a unique presence in the Afrobeats and street-pop genres.

Looking back on his journey, the singer emphasized that his achievements result from more than just talent. He credited faith, consistency, and a strong belief in his abilities as essential factors.

“Reaching this point has been due to God’s grace, self-belief, consistency, and endurance. Now, look at where I am today. I am very pleased with myself,” he noted.

From being turned away because of his choice of language to becoming one of the most streamed and recognized artists from Nigeria, Asake’s experience illustrates that the very qualities that invite skepticism can also be the strengths that differentiate you.
