Simi Clarifies Situation Following Popular Throwback Tweet From 2012

Nigerian singer Simi has responded to a resurfaced tweet from 2012 that has sparked significant discussion on social media.

The tweet, dated March 14, 2012, mentioned a four-year-old boy named David, who Simi described as having a crush on her. In the now-deleted tweet, she described how the child would come close, appearing as if he wanted to kiss her, and then resting his head on her lap. She concluded the tweet with a playful question about whether she should give him a chance, noting his age.

The tweet stated, “David has a crush on me. He kips comn close; actin lik he wana lock lips n den he puts his head on my lap.Shd I giv him a chance? P.S: Hes 4.”

Once this post reappeared online, reactions varied. Some people dismissed it as an old joke taken out of context, while others accused Simi of sexualizing a minor and called for an investigation.

On Sunday, Simi addressed the situation on her X page, explaining that she had not been online when the issue started trending. She noted that someone alerted her to the resurfaced tweets and felt the need to respond.

She clarified that she was 23 years old at the time and living at her mother’s daycare center while pursuing a music career. Simi described Twitter as an open diary back then, where she shared everyday experiences, including humorous interactions with children.

“14 years ago, I was 23, so I was definitely not a child. I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives,” she stated.

Simi explained that while living at her mother’s daycare, she shared what happened in her life, emphasizing that children can be mischievous. She expressed that her intentions were innocent: she enjoyed affectionate interactions with children and tweeted about them.

“I was not famous, so maybe if I was, I would have understood that anything is open to whatever interpretation including being used falsely by a faceless mob. I’ve never been depraved in my life.”

She also mentioned her team had begun deleting some of her tweets due to their sensitive nature for her family, although it was not her initial intention to remove them. Throughout her statement, she maintained that her comments from 2012 were innocent and lighthearted, rejecting any accusations of immorality. She reiterated her commitment to advocating against rape and sexual assault.

The discussion continues online, with some supporting her explanation and others maintaining their criticisms, illustrating the varied interpretations among social media users.
