Lizzo Expresses Her Emotions In A Tribute To Shirley Raines, The Founder Of Beauty 2 The Streetz, Saying She Is Devastated

The internet is reflecting on the passing of community leader Shirley Raines, who was discovered deceased in her home on Tuesday (Jan. 27). Many fans and notable figures are commemorating her contributions, including musician Lizzo, who expressed her sorrow while honoring Raines, referring to her as an “incredible woman.”

On Wednesday (Jan. 28), Lizzo shared her feelings on Instagram Stories. “I am devastated,” she stated. “If any of you know about any of my Juneteenth givebacks, Shirley has always been a part of them, every single year.” She reminisced about a personal conversation they had in 2024 and their shared experience at the People’s Choice Awards.

“I just have so many clothes and I saw that she was going to Skid Row, and she was going to homeless communities, and she was beautifying them,” Lizzo noted. “Helping them feel seen. Helping them feel beautiful, giving them makeovers, haircuts, clothes… She used to joke, like, ‘Girl, everybody be in your clothes.’”

The Grammy-winning artist also mentioned sending Raines items from her clothing line, Yitty, with Raines expressing that these gifts brought joy to “plus-sized girls.”

Furthermore, Lizzo commended Raines for her support during difficult times when she felt sidelined by the public, likely referring to the backlash she faced in 2023 following a lawsuit from three former dancers. “People like her are rare, special, and they deserve to be protected and honored,” she remarked. “I’m so grateful I was able to give her, her flowers when she was here.”

Raines’ unexpected death, recognized for her advocacy work for Skid Row’s homeless population, surprised many. According to People, her youngest daughter tried to contact her multiple times before visiting her home and requesting a wellness check from authorities.

Officials later discovered Raines lying “unresponsive” next to her bed. Reports indicated that there were “no visible signs” to clarify her cause of death. Rap-Up expresses its condolences to her friends and family.
