A notable surge of emotional responses was observed on social media on Wednesday night after a video emerged featuring Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, known as Teni, in tears following the Super Eagles’ elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria’s journey in the tournament concluded after the Super Eagles lost 4–2 on penalties to the host nation, Morocco, during their AFCON semi-final match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The match ended without goals after 120 minutes of competitive play, leading to a penalty shootout.

Although the final score suggested a close contest, Morocco had the upper hand, with 16 attempts on goal compared to Nigeria’s two.

The Super Eagles managed to remain competitive largely due to goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who matched Moroccan keeper Yassine Bounou save for save throughout regulation and extra time.

Nigeria’s attacking players, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, faced difficulties finding space against a well-structured Moroccan defense, effectively organized under captain Achraf Hakimi at right-back, while Noussair Mazraoui also contributed significantly to both defense and attack.

With no breakthroughs in regular play, the match proceeded to penalties, where Morocco ultimately displayed composure. Youssef En-Nesyri scored the decisive penalty, securing a spot in the final for the Atlas Lions.

Nigeria’s chances diminished as Samuel Chukwueze missed his penalty and Bruno Onyemaechi was unable to convert, while Paul Onuachu and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru were the only Nigeria players to score.

As fans throughout the country coped with the disappointment, Teni’s emotional response gained significant attention online. In a video posted on her Instagram, she was seen crying beside an elderly security guard, expressing her frustration over Nigeria’s missed penalties.

Teni, visibly upset, specifically referenced Chukwueze’s penalty miss, conveying her feelings in the video. She added a caption that mixed humor with frustration, stating:

“CHUKWUEZE I SWEAR MAKE I NO JUST TALK😡 YOU GO SEE ME FOR DREAM THIS NIGHT.”

Further concern arose when another video circulated, showing her receiving medical treatment in a hospital, indicating she may have faced a health scare following Nigeria’s defeat.

Morocco is set to compete against Senegal in the final on Sunday, aiming for their second AFCON title, with their last victory in the tournament occurring in 1976. Meanwhile, Nigeria will need to quickly regroup for the third-place playoff against Egypt, which narrowly lost to Senegal in the other semi-final.

For a wide range of fans, including celebrities, the loss represented more than just a sporting outcome, and Teni’s emotional display resonated deeply with the collective sorrow experienced by many in the nation.
