Nelly And Metro Boomin Collaborate With St. Lunatics For Their First Album In 25 Years

St. Lunatics fans have reason to celebrate. During a recent performance, Nelly announced that the group is set to release a new album in 2026, which will be executive produced by Metro Boomin.

While performing on Sunday (Dec. 14), the St. Louis rapper shared the plans with the audience. “Love in St. Louis from top to bottom one time,” Nelly stated in a clip shared on X. “Again, St. Lunatics 2026 executive produced by Metro Boomin. St. Louis, we in the building, we turning up 2026 one time!”

The St. Lunatics group includes Nelly, Ali, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, City Spud, and Slo Down, all of whom are childhood friends. Following the success of Nelly’s debut album, Country Grammar, in 2000, the group secured their own record deal that same year. Their debut album, Free City, was released the following year and included hit singles like “Midwest Swing” and “Batter Up,” ultimately achieving platinum certification.

Ali and Murphy Lee released solo albums in 2002 and 2003, respectively. To date, the group has only released one studio album as a collective. Recently, they have garnered more attention for legal issues than for their music. In September 2024, a lawsuit was filed against Nelly by Ali, Lee, Kyjuan, and City Spud, alleging copyright infringement. The four claimed they were not properly credited for their contributions to Country Grammar and Free City, seeking $50 million in royalties.

Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, Lee, Kyjuan, and City Spud requested to be removed from the case, stating they “did not authorize” their inclusion. Ali chose to remain involved but eventually dropped the lawsuit in April. Nelly pointed out that the situation arose from people being “misinformed,” while his relationship with Ali has been strained.

It remains uncertain whether Ali will participate in the upcoming project. As for Metro Boomin, the producer has played a significant role in the success of Atlanta hip-hop music for over a decade and is also a St. Louis native.

The combination of Metro teaming up with hip-hop icons from his hometown may prove to be a promising collaboration.
