Shenseea Takes Initiative in Relief Efforts in Jamaica Following Hurricane Melissa

Shenseea is actively contributing to relief efforts in Jamaica after the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa. The storm impacted southwestern Jamaica near New Hope in October, classified as an “extremely dangerous” Category 5 system with sustained winds reaching 185 mph. This level of intensity ties it with the strongest landfall recorded in the Atlantic Basin, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. It is considered one of the most powerful hurricanes in Atlantic history, resulting in significant shortages of food, water, and shelter for many communities across the island.

The artist has initiated one of the largest relief efforts led by a musician on the island, returning to her hometown of St. Elizabeth over the weekend to fund, pack, and distribute over 5,000 relief packages. She dedicated hours to working with her team to organize large amounts of essential supplies, including rice, flour, cornmeal, canned food, diapers, hygiene products, water, tarps, tents, and generators sourced from various suppliers. More distributions are anticipated to occur across the island soon, as stated in a press release.

For Shenseea, this initiative goes beyond a public relations move; it holds personal significance. She expressed, “Jamaica raised me, and whenever my country is hurting, I feel it deeply. I wanted to act quickly and give families what they need right now: food, clean water, shelter, and basic essentials. This is home, and I’ll always show up for my people,” as noted in the release.

On Instagram, she reflected on her experiences, sharing images of damaged homes and videos from her relief mission. She noted the challenges of the week but also the fulfillment she found in witnessing the resilience of her community. She added, “My heart and prayers go out to the ones I couldn’t reach. Thanks to every volunteer and members of the force who helped me to execute my project in the safest way possible.”

This effort comes alongside a successful period for the artist known for “The Sidechick Song.” Her sophomore album, Never Gets Late Here, debuted at No. 4 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart. She received a Grammy nomination and achieved a No. 1 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart with the “Shake It To The Max” remix. Additionally, she collaborated with Mariah Carey on the track “Sugar Sweet” and released her single “BOSS UP.” Even amidst her rising global success, she remains committed to prioritizing Jamaica.
