Yemi Alade, a well-known Nigerian Afro-pop singer, has revealed a deeply personal account about a time of intense emotional distress that led her to struggle with depression for several years.

The Johnny hitmaker opened up to media personality Chude Jideonwo in a forthright interview, revealing that finding out her true age had initially left her uncertain and upset.

The award-winning artist reportedly spent three years under the misapprehension that she was younger than her actual age. She recalled a time when someone inquired about her age, and for three years, she consistently claimed to be 22. At that point I understood I was indeed 25 years old. I pulled out my mobile, did some calculations, and upon discovering the truth, I felt depressed for approximately a few days. The harsh reality was more than my mind could handle. That was utterly bewildering. I was unaware of my true age for a period of three years.

Yemi Alade described the experience as shocking and mentally draining, admitting that the revelation profoundly impacted her sense of self and plunged her into depression. “She described it as a mental experience.” At that time, I had no idea who I was.

Behind her cheerful public image, the singer was secretly struggling with feelings of self-doubt and confusion. Her revelation brings to light the frequently unseen emotional challenges that go hand-in-hand with fame and personal growth, a reminder that even the most assured celebrities experience moments of exposure.
