2Baba Discusses His Views On The Afrobeats "Big Three" Debate

Veteran Nigerian singer Innocent Idibia, known as 2Baba, recently shared his views on a prominent topic within the Afrobeats genre, prompting various reactions.

During an appearance on The Mic On Podcast, hosted by Channels TV journalist Seun Okinbaloye, 2Baba was asked to weigh in on who among Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido he would consider the best. Seun challenged him by stating,

“2Baba, let me put you on the spot since you are a generation ahead of these folks. If you had to choose one from Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, who would it be?”

In response, 2Baba initially acknowledged the talent and achievements of all three artists, mentioning that he enjoys different songs from each. However, after some discussion, he expressed his choice, stating that he believes Burna Boy is currently at the forefront of the industry, while still respecting the contributions of the others.

When Seun pressed further on whether his choice was based on talent, artistry, or delivery, 2Baba offered some insight into his viewpoint. He stated that ranking artists solely on artistry is complex, as each musician has their distinct sound and creative approach. He emphasized that music preferences are subjective and vary among listeners.

2Baba clarified that his choice was not influenced by financial success or commercial achievements, as he does not have details on the artists’ earnings. He explained that his opinion is based on his general awareness of the music industry and the overall impact of the artists.

He remarked,

“Artistry varies; each artist has their style, and there isn’t a definitive measure of who is better. Each song is unique, and different listeners may prefer different things. I don’t have insights into their financial situations or personal successes, but from what I understand about the music scene, I believe Burna Boy is currently leading, not just in Nigeria but across Africa and the world, while all three artists are performing well.”

Though his comments may spark further discussions online, 2Baba’s main point was that while all three stars are successful, he feels Burna Boy currently has an advantage on the global stage.
